Cephalosporin Antibiotics

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Yury_Bayarski] Yury Bayarski Cephalosporins are the most frequently prescribed class of antibiotics. Cephalosporins are bactericidal agents, which means that they kill bacteria. They have the same mode of action as as penicillins. All bacterial cells have a cell wall that protects them. Cephalosporins disrupt the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls, which causes the walls to break down and eventually the bacteria die. Cephalosporin compounds were first isolated from cultures of Cephalosporium acremonium from a sewer in Sardinia in 1948 by Italian scientist Giuseppe Brotzu. The first agent cephalothin (cefalotin) was launched by Eli Lilly in 1964. Cephalosporins are used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, strep throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis), skin infections and urinary tract infections. They are sometimes given with other antibiotics. Cephalosporins are also commonly used for surgical prophylaxis - prevention of bacterial infection before, during, and after surgery. Classification of Cephalosporins Cephalosporins are grouped into “generations” based on their spectrum of antimicrobial activity. The first cephalosporins were designated first generation while later, more extended spectrum cephalosporins were classified as second generation cephalosporins. Each newer generation has significantly greater gram-negative antimicrobial properties than the preceding generation, in most cases with decreased activity against gram-positive organisms. Fourth generation cephalosporins, however, have true broad spectrum activity. First generation First generation cephalosporins are moderate spectrum agents. They are effective alternatives for treating staphylococcal and streptococcal infections and therefore are alternatives for skin and soft-tissue infections, as well as for streptococcal pharyngitis. The first generation cephalosporins are Cefadroxil, Cephalexin, Cephaloridine, Cephalothin, Cephapirin, Cefazolin, and Cephradine. Cefazolin is the most commonly used first generation cephalosporin. The others have similar efficacy to Cephalexin, but must be dosed more often, and are therefore not as commonly prescribed. Second generation The second generation cephalosporins have a greater gram-negative spectrum while retaining some activity against gram-positive bacteria. They are useful agents for treating upper and lower respiratory tract infections, sinusitis and otitis media. These agents are also active against E. coli, Klebsiella and Proteus, which makes them potential alternatives for treating urinary tract infections caused by these organisms. The second generation cephalosporins are Cefaclor, Cefoxitin, Cefprozil, Cefuroxime. Third generation Third generation cephalosporins have a broad spectrum of activity and further increased activity against gram-negative organisms. Some members of this group (particularly those available in an oral formulation) have decreased activity against gram-positive organisms. The parenteral third generation cephalosporins (ceftriaxone and cefotaxime) have excellent activity against most strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, including the vast majority of those with intermediate and high level resistance to penicillin. These agents also have activity against N. gonorrhoeae. Ceftazidime has useful antipseudomonal activity. The third generation cephalosporins are Cefdinir, Cefixime, Cefpodoxime, Ceftibuten, Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime. Fourth generation Fourth generation cephalosporins are extended spectrum agents with similar activity against gram-positive organisms as first generation cephalosporins. They also have a greater resistance to beta-lactamases than the third generation cephalosporins. Many can cross blood brain barrier and are effective in meningitis. The fourth generation cephalosporins are Cefepime, Cefluprenam, Cefozopran, Cefpirome, Cefquinome. Cefepime is a more gram-negative drug with somewhat enhanced activity against pseudomonas but slightly lesser activity against pneumococci. Cefpirome is more active against pneumococci and has somewhat lesser activity against pseudomonas. These drugs also have activity against nosocomial pathogens such as Enterobacter and Acinetobacter and their use should therefore be restricted to the setting of nosocomial sepsis. Side effects Cephalosporins generally cause few side effects. Common side effects involve mainly the digestive system: stomach cramps or upset, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild and go away over time. Cephalosporins can sometimes cause overgrowth of fungus normally present in the body. This overgrowth can cause mild side effects such as a sore tongue, sores inside the mouth, or vaginal yeast infections. More serious but infrequent reactions that can sometimes occur with cephalosporins include: black, tarry stools; chest pain; fever; painful or difficult urination; allergic reactions; serious colitis. Serious colitis is a rare side effect that includes severe watery diarrhea (sometimes containing blood or mucus), severe stomach cramps, fever, and weakness or faintness. Because the cephalosporins are structurally similar to the penicillins, some patients allergic to penicillins may be allergic to a cephalosporin antibiotic. The incidence of cross-sensitivity is approximately 5Ц10%. Yury Bayarski is the author of [http://www.price-rx.com/] Price-RX.com - prescription drug price comparison website. Saskatchewan, Canada Gift Basket Ideas

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Wendy Wood Joining Manitoba and Alberta, the province of Saskatchewan serves as the middle region within the section of Canada known as “the Three Prairie Provinces.” Within this interesting stretch of land, the largest city, Saskatoon, boasts a population close to 250,000 with other major cities trailing behind, such as Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, and Swift Current. As a gift basket business owner, there are plenty of ideas to tap into when it comes to exploring the culture, arts, and history of Saskatchewan. Historically, the land serving as home to Saskatchewan was populated by an array of Native American groups that occupied the territory before European settlement took place. Prior to the first European to step foot on Saskatchewan soil, Algonquian, Sioux, and Cree tribes inhabited the vicinity during the late 1600s. To explore the beauty of the Native American culture, gift baskets may include an assortment of pearls, precious and semi-precious stones that allow consumers to create their own necklaces, bracelets, and other pieces of jewelry. A do-it-yourself guidebook coupled with a finished piece may also accompany the arrangement. This kind of basket would make the perfect unique bridesmaid gift or graduation gift for a student. In Saskatchewan, the centennial of the province was celebrated in 2005. To pay homage, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a commemorative 5-dollar coin that displayed the wheat fields of the country. Wheat is seen as a strong symbol of Canada, also making an appearance on license plates throughout Saskatchewan in the form of three stalks. Today, a boost in wheat-related products has made strides in promoting a healthier outlook on diet. A gift basket with wheat pasta, fruit and nut wheat breads, wheat crackers, wheat bran, and flavored shredded wheat stands to turn a profit. Hockey is also a popular aspect of Saskatchewan, as it is one of the top provinces to send the most players per capita to the National Hockey League (NHL). Signature pucks, stuffed animal mascots, and colorfully decorated snacks are just some of the ways to fill a hockey-related gift basket. When it comes to golf, Saskatchewan is probably not one of the first places to come to mind when it comes to courses. Throughout the province, there are almost 250 golf courses scattered about the area, which is said to possess more courses per capita than any other location in the world. Obviously, there must be enough golfers in the province to keep these establishments thriving. Gift baskets offering tees, novelty golf balls, stuffed animals in golfing attire, and even golf-themed pasta could prove quite beneficial. Alternative Treatment For Psoriasis - Detoxification

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Sandra Kim Leong An alternative treatment for psoriasis is detoxification. This treatment may just be the solution that you need to keep your skin disorder under control. According to naturopathic doctors, treating psoriasis helps by treating your liver. Psoriasis has been linked to the presence of several microbial byproducts in the blood. These signs point to an abnormal function of the liver. Your liver is supposed to be responsible for filtering and detoxifying the blood. With microbial byproducts found in the blood, it is an indication that your liver is either overloaded with excessive levels of these toxins or that there is a reduction in its detoxification abilities. Psoriasis, which means to itch in greek, is a chronic ailment whereby your skin forms red lesions that develop into scales or patches all over. These red eruptions make the skin itch leaving marks. The intensity of your skin disorder is likely to differ from that of another person. Intensity levels range from a massive outbreak to as mild as just a few patches. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder. It is usually genetic but is not infectious or contagious. Although it appears that there is no particular cure for this disease, there are some things that you can do to reduce the level of your itch. Naturopathic doctors say that the inflammation of the skin, red irruptions, scales and flakes on the skin which cause itching are clear signs of toxins. An alternative treatment for psoriasis namely detoxification, should help to remove harmful toxins and poisons from your liver and body. There are in fact many ways to detoxify for psoriasis and you may wish to adopt a combination where appropriate: Detox diet. To detoxify for psoriasis, a dedicated detox diet program that helps you to cleanse your liver will help. Consult a naturopathic doctor for this. He should be able to advise you on how to go about with a liver and a body cleanse. Do take note that women who are pregnant should not go on a detox diet nor consider any form of detoxification during their pregnancy. Also, if you are taking any conventional medications, get your doctors advice before going on a detox diet. In all situations, a healthy and balanced diet is a must. You should not consume food or drinks that will aggravate your disease. Avoid caffeine, such as coffee or strong tea. Herbal tea is also recommended for psoriasis. Spicy food and alcohol should be restricted. Refrain from red meat, shellfish and tropical fruits. Herbal supplements. There are many types of herbal supplements for detoxification of your liver. These herbal supplements help enhance your immunity system and can prevent the psoriasis from recurring. Peony Red, Moutan, Lithospermum, Millettia, Salvia, Carthamus, Sophora (root), Rehmannia Raw, Gardenia, Isatis Root, and Smilax are some of the herbs used in psoriasis tablets. Homeopathy. Homeopathy is an alternative treatment that has been effective for many types of diseases. For a homeopathic remedy for detoxification, you will need to consult a practitioner who has specialised knowledge. Hydra detox system. Hydra detox system is a machine by which you soak or immerse your feet, for approximately half an hour, in water. The machine helps to remove the harmful toxins through the pores of your feet. It is a new age method for detoxification of psoriasis and can be included as part of your overall treatment plan to become well. Reduce stress levels. Psoriasis like most other diseases is worsened by stress. Stress increases the toxins in your body, thus resulting in negative effects on your health and skin. You should try these suggestions for alleviating stress levels: meditation, yoga and sleeping well. Getting rid of stress helps to rebalance your system to a healthier and stronger state. What are the Benefits of Accessing Court Records?

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Amit Mehta Court records can be useful for a myriad of reasons. They can help in a lawsuit, allow you to learn more about your ancestors if you are interested in genealogy, or even help you establish that there are no liens on a property you are interested in purchasing. Court records include information concerning marriage and divorce, adoption, and arrests and criminal trials. Searching out court records can be a beneficial way to find the information you need to assist you with all of these things. If you are currently involved in a lawsuit, researching the court records of the party you are suing or being sued by can give you a huge advantage in court. It is important to know that history of the party you are dealing with and court records can provide that history. Whether it is researching old lawsuits or judgments against the party, or finding out if they have a criminal record, the information can be invaluable when it comes to helping you with your current case. If you are interested in genealogy, court records are an entertaining and interesting way to learn about the family history that no one talks about. By searching through court records, you might find many intriguing stories about your great great grandparents activities. These stories could include tales about members of your family on the wrong side of the law or perhaps stories of family members helping justice to prevail by acting as a witness in court. Court records could also turn up interesting lawsuits and disputes that your ancestors may have been involved in. If you are interested in purchasing a piece of property, it is important to know if that property has any liens or judgments against it. By searching though court records you can tell you if the property is free from liens. If there is a lien on a piece of property that you are interested in, that should drastically reduce your offer or cause you to continue looking for another piece of property. You can find a lot out about a person simply through court records. Court records will tell you if the person you are dating really is divorced from their spouse. Not only will court records tell you if the person you are interested in is truly divorced, they can tell you how many times that person has been divorced and even the amount of alimony that the person you are dating is paying to an ex-spouse. You can even research if the person that recently asked you for a date has a criminal record or has been arrested through court records. In todays world, it pays to keep yourself well informed about the people you do business with everyday. Court records are a valuable resource for finding out information concerning coworkers, potential business partners, and even people you are interested in dating. Dr. Amit Mehta is a writer for http://Find-Court-Records.org, a large online database that provides unrestricted instant access to all court records.
