The Male-Female Form of the Lord

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Aravind Venkatraman One of the 64 manifestations of Shiva - the man-woman form with Parvati constituting the left half of Shiva. This is a much-hailed form in scriptures of various languages. Mother Shakthi once propitiated Lord Shiva with such fervent intensity that she be part of him in body and mind. Her pleased husband through his divine powers granted her this wish. The Master then absorbed her in half of himself and thus was created the half-man half-woman aspect of Lord Shiva, symbolising the oneness of all beings. The Significance: This fusion of Shiva and Shakthi representing the male and female halves transcends the distinction between and limitation of male and female and takes the Lord to the level of beyond-gender manifest Brahman, realization of which means liberation. Shakthi part is golden, while Shiva part is snow-white. She is substrate and He is substance.. Shiva is static; Shakthi is dynamic and creative. Shiva is Being and Shakthi is Becoming. He is One; She is many; He is Infinite and She renders the Infinite into finite; He is formless and She renders the Formless into myriad forms; But both are one. Shiva and Shakthi exist in Nirmala Turiya state (Stainless Purity). When it comes to worship of Ardhanarisvara, some worship the Shiva aspect and some worship the Shakthi aspect. Shiva is viewed as the Holder of Power, though he is inert. Shiva is Shava (dead body) without Shakthi. All that power in creation, maintenance, and dissolution rests with Shakthi. But the Great Mother does not exist without Shiva. When they become one Ardhanarishvara becomes a being of generative and constructive force. Ardhanarishvara it seems shows us just what can be done when we embrace the opposite in ourselves. Philosophically, this form portrays the boundless Grace of God. The formless God is called parashiva. On Its own free-will for the benefit of pashus (souls), which are drowned in pAsha (bondage), It thinks to create the worlds. Its dynamism of creation thus springs out of It, which is called Shakthi. Now Shiva and Its power Shakthi create everything. This is the form of their togetherness that makes every existence active. Shiva and Shakthi are one and the same Supreme may also act independently. They are associated like the person and the action of the person. They are one and the same like the ice and the water - one becomes the other. Poet Kalidasa hails them as inseparable like the word and its meaning, the letter and pronunciation!! vAk arthA viva samprakthau vAkartha pprathipathayaejagatha: pithrau vandhe parvathi parameshwarau To derive the pertinent idiom and its ideation I adore the Parents of Universe, Paarvati and Parameshvara, who are like an ever-embodied entity of sound and its sense. From time immemorial the man-woman relationship has always dominated the very fabric of civilization. Whether it is the western theory of creation, that of Adam and Eve, or the Indian concept of Purusha and Prakriti, the very core of civilization stems from the concept of the union of the male and the female. Shiva and Shakthi are compared to gold and gold ornaments; they are same; Shiva is hypostasis and when this force fuses with Shakthi results in multitude of manifestations. Legends: We find many references in our ancient puranas, regarding the origin of this Supreme form. Brahma the creator of the universe, crafted the cosmos as per the divine instruction. He made all the living beings and yet could not find any development. The beautiful world remained lifeless without any expansion. The maker was very much worried. A heavenly voice instructed him to commence creation with the help of copulative activities. But Brahma was finding it impossible since all the forms had been inert (males) till then. At this instance the supreme form of Ardhanareeshwara manifested. Brahma contemplated on this form of Shiva - Shakti. The Lord became very pleased with him revealed his Ardhanari form- Left side of his body resembled like a woman while the right side appeared like a man. Lord Brahma worshipped this form of Shiva and the Lord then separated the feminine part of his body and thus manifested mother Shakti. Lord Brahma worshipped her and requested to bestow such power by which he could create a woman. Goddess Shakti blessed him by saying ‘So be it’ and vanished. This way Lord Brahma became capable of commencing copulative creation. It was only then that Brahma realized his mistake and created a woman, and Srishti or creation began. In another episode, Goddess Umadevi once playfully closed the eyes of her beloved, which plunged the world into darkness. All living beings suffered in the dark. The universal mother felt for her folly and separated herself from her companion. Mother started worshipping Lord Shiva in the form of Linga to absolve herself of this sin and to reunite with him. Lord Vishnu, (or Adi Kesava Perumal, enshrined at Thiruchenkode, a unique Ardhanareeshwara temple) instructed Shakthi on the Kedara Gowri Vratam to be performed to unite with Shiva. When she reached Kancheepuram, Lord Shiva ordered her to proceed to Thiruvannamalai and do her penance. Likewise Mother Parvathi did penance at Pavalakundru with the help of Saint Gowthama. A demon called Makishasuran disturbed the penance of Mother Parvathi. The Mother took the form of goddess Durga Devi and destroyed him on the full moon day of the Tamil Month of Karthigai during the auspicious period of pradosham. Lord Shiva presented himself in the form of Fire atop the hill and merged Goddess Parvathi on the left half of his body. This day of Supreme merger is celebrated as Deepavali. To commemorate this event, every year during the festival of Annamalai Deepam, Lord Arthanareeswaramurthi presents himself as Jyothi Swaroopa to his devotees. Another famous anecdote of Ardhanareeshwra is related to Sage Bringi. Sage Bringi was one of the ardent devotees of Lord Shiva who considered that Shiva grace is the ultimate source for existence. He was a violent votary of Lord Shiva to the exclusion of any deity in the worship including Parvathi! He refused to worship Shakthi, a woman. Even during his daily worship, he would circumbulate only the Lord ignoring Mother Shakthi, with a flashing spark of arrogance. The divine couple wanted to enlighten the sage and hence assumed this unique form sharing his body with Parvathi. The couple took the form of Ardhanareeshwara and stood unified inseparable to every atom. Even then the egoistic sage took the form of a bee (Bringa is a Sanskrit for Bee. The sage came to be called Bhringi because he once became a bee.) and tried to pierce through the body of the Lord so that he could go around only the Shiva part. In every human body the static force of Shiva constituted the bone and the skin and the dynamic force of Shakthi triggered the blood and flesh. Goddess Shakti, being the power as the name indicates, pulled out her energy from Bringi’s body. Now he was a mere skeleton and was even unable to stand. The Lord pacified Parvathi and gave the sage one more leg to stand. The sage soon realized his folly and understood that life becomes dynamic only by the blending of both grace and force which are not contradictory but complementary to each other. Which Online Dating Agency Should You Choose?

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Dave Thomas There are many online dating agencies, some better than others. There are several questions that you may want to ask when looking for an online dating agency. Some that come to mind are as follows: 1. Should you use a paid dating agency or a free agency? Contrary to what you may think, you are not necessarily more likely to be successful with a paid dating agency than a free one. A paid dating agency will have a greater budget for advertising, and this is where your money tends to go. Most paid dating agencies allow you to set up a profile for free, and you can sometimes find that the people you contact can’t reply because they haven’t purchased a subscription; this can waste a lot of your time. You would not find this problem with a free agency; nor would you get the problem with an agency that allows non-subscribers to reply to your message. However, a free service is more likely to contain lower quality profiles, possibly including swearing and similar, because with free advertising-sponsored sites, there is little money to pay for people to manually check profiles. 2. How good is their matching technology? Matching technology varies from matching physical characteristics such as height and eye colour, to in-depth psychological question reviews and surveys to fill in, such as seen on OkCupid. In general, physical characteristics are usually unimportant when it comes to finding someone with whom you would wish to have a relationship. Age, personality, whether they have children, their religion and similar are more important, and where dating agencies provide options to match based on these items, you are more likely to be successful, and you will cut down on your searching time. 3. Should you go for a general dating agency, or a dating agency aimed at a particular subsection of the population? There are plenty of dating agencies and introduction agencies that cater for people that hold a certain religion, people who are looking for a certain kind of relationship or just friendship, and other subsections. If the person who you are looking for must have a certain characteristic, then it may be worth looking at a dating agency aimed at people who have that characteristic, otherwise it’s best to stick with the general ones. 4. How attractive is the dating website? If the website of an online dating agency is attractive, you will be more likely to visit it regularly. You are no different from anybody else in this respect. Also, some dating websites email you when significant events happen, like a new person signing up in your area, or somebody sending you a message. If they do this, then you are more likely to visit the site when such an event happens, and the site will likely be more successful for you. 5. What is the general opinion of that dating site? What do people think of it? Don’t be fooled by dating agencies that tell you that they arrange one marriage a week; they may well do so, but that may be quite easy for them if they have millions of profiles on their system. Look for the opinions of expert reviewers, and the opinions of ordinary men or women who have used the dating agency. David Thomas runs Flirt-Coach.net, a website about flirting and dating that includes reviews and public opinions of popular online dating services such as LoopyLove and Match.com. Why not read these and other reviews on the site to help you make your mind up? The Causes Of Stuttering In Childhood

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Steve Hill Stuttering is a problem that affects approximately one in every hundred people. It is mainly men who stutter, seven out of ten people who stutter are male. There are many types of stutter. Family and friends may not even be aware that a person they know has a stutter. That is because the person is able to hide the stutter, by using word avoidance or word substitution. Other people are unable to ddo this and have what they would consider an openely more severe stutter. Stuttering would normally occur more when a person is:under pressurewhen tiredmeeting new peoplespeaking in an uncomfortable situationasking questions, for example asking for directionsintroducing people Stuttering can also be known in some areas as stammering. Stuttering therapy: People who have a stutter have different options when seeking therapy. They can go to a speech therapist or speech pathologist.Alternatively they can attend a speech course. These courses can be on a group basis or on a one to one basis. Recent Tarpon in Cuba

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Peter McLeod I was fishing with my guide - William. We set off with the specific intention of catching some tarpon. The first hour was spent poling over a larger area with no luck. William then decided that we would go to his secret spot. This was an area at the tip of a long beach. We found some very large permit and snapper but could get no takes; one medium sized tarpon which I hooked. This fish jumped a couple of times and then threw the hook. At this point the waves were making it difficult to stand up in the boat, so we decided to make a move. A couple of miles further down the coast we came to an area were the flats came very close to the edge of the reef. We poled along about 50 yard from the edge the inside of the reef. There were lots of coral heads, so a few blind casts for snapper were made, resulting in a follow from an enormous Cubera snapper that turned away at the last minute. However, about 200yards away we could see a white hole about 50 yards across with fish moving in it. Nearing the hole we could see that they were tarpon of around 20- 40 lbs, and the school had about 30 fish in it. First cast in front of the school resulted in a hook up, the fish jumping out of the water and throwing the hook. I continued to strip and another fish took the fly, this time throwing the hook after three jumps. Good gracious me! I saidor words to that effect. During this time the boat had drifted past the hole and we noticed that there were permit there as well. William poled down further and when he thought it was safe to do so, he started the motor and we returned above for another drift. William was excellent and started again at least 150 yards away from the hole the fish were still there. On the first cast I hooked and landed a fish of about 25lbs or so. I was using a Sage Xi2 11wt with Sage tropical fly line on a Charlton reel. I dropped my Tibor Gulfstream during a customs check at the airport so I used my back up reel. The Charlton is really a fantastic product and I set the drag very tight. I checked it with my Boga Grip and it was only 10lbs but it seemed like a lot more to me. I was using 40lb leader with an 80lb shock tippet. I decided that I would fish down and dirty and I gave the tarpon no chance. Rod tip in the water, they all came in very quickly. After releasing the first tarpon I saw a bigger fish swimming about 20 yards away. I did not even have time to put my cap back on before making another cast. I like to use Tarpon flies tied with rabbit and strip the fly with slow short strips so that the fly pulses in the water. This fish came slowly up to the fly went to take it and missed and then missed again! This happened five or six times before it was finally in its mouth. It was just a couple of seconds but felt like a lifetime. It feels like you stop breathing and your heart stops. The fish then swam off and I had the opportunity to get a good hook set by strip striking hard. I think that when tarpon fishing if the fish jumps very quickly you can’t get a good hook set. Anyway he was on and there was no way I was going to loose it. Using good old down and dirty tactics I had the fish to the boat in 10 mins. After landing it we measured it and carefully revived and released it. When we got back to the lodge it was calculated to be about 65lbs. I thought it was a little bigger but after all, I am an angler…. http://www.aardvarkmcleod.com/review2.asp Peter McLeod has had a fly rod in his hand since he was seven years old, and has dedicated his life to the pursuit of different species on the fly. Fifteen Tips To Getting Yourself Hired

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Gerry McLaughlin 1) Set aside some time, even if its just an hour every day looking for jobs. If you do it in the morning, itll make you feel better later in the day, as youll feel you are taking steps towards your job-hunting process. If you have a partner, they will appreciate it too, knowing you are making good use of your time. 2) Customize your resume for each job that youre applying for, writing in greater depth about the skills required for the job. This will bring greater prominence and attention to the employer. 3) Make sure that you have all the buzzwords on your resume, as agencies mainly identify candidates through searches. 4) Follow-up by calling a dozen agencies each day, just to remind them that you are still available. Although your resume will come up when the agency does a search, so will hundreds of others, and you want to make sure that the agencies consider you first for jobs that have come in that day. 5) Monitor as many of the job boards as you can, and resend your resume each time a new job comes up that matches your skills, even if the particular agency already has your resume. 6) Keep your resume to 2 pages in length, as no one wants read a 10-page resume when they have hundreds of others to read. Make sure you have a summary of your skills on the front page. Remember that this is a sales document. If you want to impress further, make your resume a Brochure, as this will stick out from the crowd plus show that you work in a professional manner. 7) Show your resume to as many friends as possible for their comments, and ask agencies for their comments as well. 8) Send out a fresh online batch of resumes to extra agencies each week. More and more companies operate with Preferred Supplier lists, and if you are not on the books of the Preferred Supplier agency, you will not be considered. Therefore, its suggested that you be on the books of as many agencies as possible. 9) Dont rely strictly on agencies, but use your own contacts. Call up or email your old companies, bosses or fellow workers to see if there are any opportunities they might provide. 10) Get in touch with all the old colleagues that you are still in touch with to find out if they are aware of any work that may be going on at their companies. If youve lost touch with many of the people that you worked with, use reunion sites like NamesFacesPlaces to see if any old colleagues who might be registered could help you find work. 11) Find something else to do with your spare time, which may become useful in the future. Learn a new skill or build your own website. Once youre back in work, youll wish that you had made better use of your time. 12) Attend networking events such as those organized by the PCG or the BCS. Perhaps you could organize a reunion or other event. Schedule a time to get together for drinks with colleagues who worked at a particular site with you. The people you invite will invite others and as they may have similar skills to you and may know of some work going at the companies they work for. 13) Look in on IT discussion web sites where you will find people with the same problems. Here you can learn and share advice. You may also get encouragement after talking to some people who were out of work but have managed to get jobs. Ask them how they did it. 14) When you finally get an interview, remember to prepare well for it. Make sure that you reacquaint your self with the subject matter. Ask one of your friends with similar skills to interview you first so you can better prepare yourself. Theres nothing worse than failing an interview that you feel you should have landed, due to lack of preparation. 15) And lastly, dont give up. Its difficult to keep repeating and doing the same things on a daily basis without immediate results, but your perseverance will pay off in the end. Have You been Denied for a Business Loan? Add a Credit Policy to your Business Plan and Get Approved

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Michelle Dunn If you have been to the bank to get a business loan to start a business or for funding for your existing business you probably approached them with a business plan and possibly a marketing plan or outline. Every business plan has part of if not all of a marketing plan included. If you were denied your loan, part of the problem could be that you didnt explain or elaborate enough on how you were going to pay back the money you want to borrow. Your business plan tells the lender what you are going to do for a business, and the marketing plan tells them how you are going to obtain new clients and make money. Your credit plan or credit policy tells them how you are going to get paid, in order to pay them back. The credit plan will also tell them what you will do if you do make sales and dont get paid. This can put a bankers mind at ease, while showing them that you are serious about your business and about paying them back. Approval of any loan is based on many things, one of the most important being on how you present yourself and your business. A well written business plan is the first step, and will give the lender an overall picture of your business. Make sure you include a credit history or if you have poor credit, get copies of your credit reports and fix any errors and pay off any debts before approaching a lender. You can expedite the processing of your loan by providing the lender with as much relevant information that they need to make a decision right away. If they have to continually contact you for more information, your chances of approval go down. Banks will carefully and particularly look to see if you have a solid understanding of financial record keeping, business credit, the importance of collecting accounts receivables, inventory control and turnover and marketing. If you include a credit policy as well as a marketing plan or marketing plan outline with your business plan you will find that the lender will take you much more seriously and if they had any questions on your understanding of their being paid back will see that you have thought this through and have a plan in place to pay them back their money. That makes every banker happy; remember they make money by lending you money. Remember, when you are trying to get someone to give you money, it is a hard job and the more thorough you are the better your chances. If you approach your lender with a professional looking business plan, that includes a marketing plan and a credit plan, your application will go to the top of the pile. Teaching Children To Pray With Christian Prayers

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Michael Heindel Discussing spiritual matters with young ones can be a trying task. If you have ever attempted it, you know that their insatiable curiosity will lead them to ask many questions which might end up stumping you. So when you are teaching your children to pray, you will have to be very strategic about it. To start with, you should pray with your child on a nightly basis. He or she will be able to learn by example, and in seeing you bring yourself before the Lord, a good example will be set. But this isnt limited to nightly kneeling sessions by the bed. Teaching prayer is something that should happen in your day-to-day life. Whenever even the smallest blessing occurs, point it out to your children and thank God for it. This will establish with the child that for everything precious in the world, God is to be thanked. Be extremely aware of whenever the prayer of your child is answered. It is too easy to pray for something, and then when it happens think something along the lines of wow, that was lucky! If you notice that some prayer of your child has come true, make a huge deal of it and show the child the importance of looking for God in daily life. From the beginning of your childs life, teach him or her to enjoy the creation that God has given us. Point out the sheer natural beauty of the world we live in, and point out how God has given us the gifts to enjoy. Just as you appreciate beauty and miracles through prayer with your children, teach them to use prayer to cope with unpleasant situations. For example, if you pass a car crash, say a quick family prayer. This will teach your child that prayer is multi-faceted, and an outlet for showing gratefulness as well as appealing to Gods good will. Every evening, bless and pray over your children. Use the classic blessing before bedtime: May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. This will help your children to realize that God is always present and protective. Prayer, like anything taught to a child, is better taught through actions than by trying to explain. Show your child what it is like to pray on a regular basis. Bring prayer up whenever possible, and relate it to the current situation. If you can truly impress the importance and the significance of prayer on your child, you will have accomplished a truly great feat as a parent.
